When I stepped into my Pilates Teacher Training, over 10 years ago, I realized that I had no idea what my body actually needed. I’d never even considered asking what my body needed.

I was drawn to Pilates as a healing modality. Being a lifelong dancer, I spent most of my life forcing my body into specific positions (and depriving it from nourishment to make sure it looked a certain way). I knew how to leap and turn, but I didn’t actually know my body.

I used my body but I didn’t inhabit it.

I had taken anatomy courses at Purchase College (while getting my BFA in Dance) and for my Personal Training certification. I knew which muscles were where but I didn’t actually know how the pieces and parts worked to stabilize and mobilize me.

I thought I was going to come out of my Pilates Teacher Training doing the most challenging movements on equipment I’d been drawn to for years. Instead, I was literally teaching myself how to walk again. Not that I couldn’t walk at all. I could. But I couldn’t walk without pain.

All those years of contorting my body and starving myself taught me that pain was a normal thing to live with. Pilates taught me otherwise. That’s what I’m here to teach the world and that’s what I’ve built my entire business on.

Hi, I’m Charlotte. I am a postnatal pilates expert, movement practitioner, mentor, and founder of Charlotte Blake Pilates.

I am a wife to my loving husband, a mama to my son Bodhi, and a dog-mama to a rescue corgi named Remi. Bodhi and Remi are best friends and love doing Pilates with me (which you can see videos of on my Instagram).

I’m still a dancer, just not one who lives in pain. I mostly dance in my living room in Williamsburg or in my yard in Saugerties, but I’ve also been known to perform at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden or at a tiny theater in the East Village.

I established Charlotte Blake Pilates to help people bring greater alignment, strength, and presence to their body and their lives.

Because of my own personal wellness journey, I am committed to helping people get out of being in and living with pain. I believe that everyone deserves to live a pain-free life (and that it’s possible to do so).

I believe that healing our bodies is deep and sacred work that no one is meant to do alone and that healing the physical body also heals the mental, emotional, spiritual, and energetic body.

I believe in a heart-centered approach to pilates and healing that is YOU-focused, because everyone’s journey looks different and there is no “cookie cutter” approach that applies to every body.

I believe that healing is a process and that committing to this process opens you up to living life as a whole and complete being. And I have a variety of offerings to help you get started.

I have been serving and supporting the postnatal community for over 10 years through one-on-one support, group programs, workshops, lectures, and distance learning.

In my mid-20s — years ahead of birthing a baby of my own — I was able to discern that there simply isn’t enough support available for postnatal recovery. This is why I have devoted much of my work to serving people after childbirth.

I am committed to disrupting the way birthing bodies heal postpartum. My own birth story and postpartum journey has fueled this work.
